About the project

Lisa Kessel Design was entrusted with the restoration of a large Provençal mas, a historic countryside property with generous volumes and authentic architectural character. The brief was to convert the former hotel into a warm, elegant private home for clients who host frequently and love to gather family and friends.

The house needed to accommodate numerous guest suites, several reception rooms, a dedicated bar, a games room with a vintage billiard table and jukebox, two dining rooms, a grand salon, and a professional kitchen, all while ensuring that the owners preserved a private, quiet wing for themselves.

Our approach balanced restoration and comfort: preserving the soul and patina of the mas without over-renovating it, while integrating the modern comforts expected of a contemporary home.

For the interiors, we blended the clients’ existing pieces with carefully sourced antiques, bespoke joinery, new furniture where needed, and a refined selection of art. The result is a home that feels deeply personal, layered with history, and perfectly attuned to the way the clients live and entertain

Step by step project

From the very first sketches, we worked hand in hand with the architects, the project manager and a trusted team of local craftsmen. Every element was thoughtfully curated: bespoke flooring in each room, limewash paints in custom tones, hand-selected wallpapers, and marbles and stones chosen individually for every area.

All doors were sourced from a specialist in reclaimed architectural materials, and the antique fireplaces were restored with care. Nothing was left to chance, from the selection of furniture and textiles to the design of every curtain, fixture and layout. Each decision was guided by our clients’ needs and lifestyle, ensuring a home that feels effortlessly natural, deeply comfortable and unmistakably theirs.
